What is the difference between Foxtail & Foxylady seedlings? DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE

Note the smooth texture of the seed fiber compared to a course fiber foxtail. I do not grow foxtails, so there could not be a mix up there. I have plenty of foxtails and Veitchia arecina in the yard so maybe it did a cross back with one of them to become fertile? I don't want to give a utility an excuse to start cutting back other healthy palms in my garden that are even further from the phone lines than this one. Perhaps as a couple of adjacent palms get a little larger I'll have to be proactive and remove it, along with a -postmortem of what was happening internally at the weeping site.

Only the variegated FL produced viable seed so far, but none of the seedlings are variegated.
I at least have 2 other Foxy Ladies planted about the same time.

The seeds that Mike Evans germinated were F2, there is no guarantee they will be Wodveitchias.

Some died at seedling stage, and others just died a slow death, even though they were all grown in shade. They seem to have an overall hard time surviving. The only exception, would be the ones that are extremely variegated. Erik, the Foxtails were planted many months before the F1 Foxyladies.

Wodyetia X Veitchia AKA Foxy Lady

I have 2 that look just like a foxtail. I know of 1 other grower in Cape Coral that gets viable seed. Here are a few pics of some of the F2's that I am growing out to sell. The vast majority of the good looking seed are NOT viable. Sometime even though they are hard, they float. These foxy lady palms are thirsty and it's nearly impossible to overwater them. The foxtails are the ones in community pots, and foxyladies are singles in 1 gal. It PROVES that it is a true foxy lady,as foxtails are almost never variegated. I've got several foxtails (probably too many, but it was the first "exotic" tree that I really liked), some common King palms, and some Kentias. Foxy Lady palms are incredibly fast growing palms and I think yours has a fighting chance if you get it in the ground ASAP and keep it's rootball watered. It never ceases to amaze me how little water rootbound palms in pots get, even if you soak them everyday. Wow that looks like a lot of growth for 6 months since planting. I wonder if the very elongated seed has more Veitchia traits and the more rounded F2 seed has the foxtail traits? Typically I find the F1 does have the hybrid vigor, except when they are very variegated. Only the variegated FL produced viable seed so far, but none of the seedlings are variegated. That is how you can tell the difference between foxtail and Foxy Lady hybrid. So after a couple weeks of treatment, the remaining leaves are browning but I have noticed some minimal growth (a couple millimeters) of the spear. If you do the 24hr soak thing, put a weak solution of seaweed extract in the water too. This would happen far more quickly for you than it does for those of us in the humid tropics where the plant tissues survive on atmospheric moisture for ages before the final collapse. That should happen in shade and then it should be shifted up and placed gradually into more and more sun over the course of a month or two until it is hardened and can go in the ground. Do you have a FULL shade spot under some trees or overhang?

So I have been watching this palm I acquired as a Foxy Lady as it has increasing leaned toward the south this summer. Well mine has a sparse seed set that dropped today. If this one produces seed, you should be able to tell if they have a chance.. While the largest would flower & produce seed often, most seed i'd collect were empty or basically liquid when opened.

F1 vs f2 foxy lady

I have 3-7g (one slight variegation) I have 3-3g (one slight variegation) I do need to get better on checking my palm talk tho! Purchased several years ago as a seedling from a breeder in Florida. Was it grown from a seed made by nature or by manual cross pollination? Where did that palm originate? @96720 Taking a look at your foxy lady in the pic. I have an f2 foxy lady I might be interested in letting go if you are interested I can come pick up that palm at your convenience,deliver you $200 cash, plus the 3 Pseudophoenix seedlings in the pic if you would be interested in selling. I have got palms from Flouibunda and jungle music and never had the problem I had with this palm of you are going to ship palms at least learn how to pack them!!! I never said the palm looked bad I said it was basically bare root and variegated which I specifically said I didn’t want!!! Anyone have success with seeds from a foxy lady? After foxy gold casino many years and trees that are ungodly tall, my foxy lady, 1 of 2 dropped 2 very ripe very real looking seeds. I’m hoping that the foxy lady will turn all green it only has 1 frond that is variegated.

Here is the palm, looks very healthy aside from the obvious cold spots on the old fronds.
The green form tends to perform better in full all day sun than the variegated which burns more easily especially in hot dry sun.
As Dean says, if it doesn't budge after a week or two of this shock, you may have a dead palm and one day the crownshaft will just collapse on you along with any green material that remains.

I have a couple of other Foxy Ladies that I got roughly at the same time which each shoe different characteristics, but I digress from the issue.
You did not get a palm that was basically bare root and a palm you specifically said you did not want!!!
I guess I better start thinking about what I want to plant in it's place eventually.

In all the years i have observed it, fronds on the variegated spec. I'd suggest spending sometime at Kopsick Palmatium in St. Pete. So why does it seem the green is the better choice ? Time will tell with my original plant... I'm encouraged to see some growth of the spear, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. They s/b just a hard and firm as a foxtail or vetchia to be viable. The fastest way I check for viable seed is to roll the seed on concrete with my foot, giving it some moderate pressure. It took about years of seeding until some viable seed dropped. I have been growing F2 Foxy Ladies for the last 3 years. I planted a 1 gallon Cyphophoenix elgans to the east of it about 3-4 years ago, so its just starting to gain some momentum. Sorry to hear this.....time to edit and replace. By the looks of it, drying and wilting, what're the odds of a rebound if I get it in the ground with profuse water? I highly recommend that you just plant this. That thing is so root bound that you need to do slow drip like they do or just plant it. I was advised by the seller to apply a kelp extract/ water mix, then heavy water every other day, with superthrive/ water every five days. I marked the spear the day it was delivered, and there has been zero growth (I wouldn't be concerned with that at this point, except that the leaf has now snapped) Yes the Veitchia can and has been the host, I had one growing at my former residence , it looks like a Veitchia, with yellowish petioles. Foxyladies hold the variegation when mature. Here are a few slightly variegated ones. Good stuff when ever someone finds a full green or the lucky charm let me know would like a small one it’s almost like finding Waldo There is full green and mostly green. Exactly I believe even the green form has some at some point I saw a mature green form produce some variation. Did not notice the variegation earlier but as Jim pointed out, on the lower leaf there it is.

Call me anytime to chat about transplanting palms. They say the foxy lady is a rocket but the growth rate appears to be the same as seedlings. The foxtails have been grown in some shade, and the foxyladies have been growing in at least 1/2 day Sun. Yep, I was told it's the mother plant genes that determine the fruit/seed so you can't tell an F1 hybrid without growing it! Seed from a foxtail palm will only look like foxtail seeds even if something else is going in the seed. But I have had a foxy lady from came off of one of my foxtails....
